James---I like Peter's method of barring the engine over, using the
alternator nut.
It is also possible to just put the transmission in any gear, and push
the car to move the valve(s) into position. (Spark plugs do not have to
be removed.)
The main point here is that the valves being adjusted do not have to
find the piston at TDC. Each pair of valves stays closed for close to
200 degrees of crankshaft rotation, so it's easy to find a point to
check/adjust properly. (An even longer duration if you check each valve
randomly) In nearly all conditions, a twist of the pushrods with the
fingertips tells that the valve is closed, and is ready for the feeler
gauge.
A wrench on the alternator, huh? Slick!
