Dan,
It sounds to me as if your oil pump is the early version. I have not
examined one of those, but have seen pics, and descriptions.

The early version had a cast bottom plate that formed a "squarish"
tube(actually rectangular), that extended from the pump body down into
the sump. The pics that I have seen also show an intake screen, that fits
into the tip end of the casting. It would prevent larger bits of trash
from entering the pump, but not really a filter.

Kastner mentions two pumps for the 2.5 engine, in his competition prep
manual, and although I am not sure, yours may be the lower volume pump,
that he says to replace with the higher volume pump. Again, I am not
sure, but the lower volume pump is probably adequate for street use.
Others may have a more educated opinion on your particular pump, and
wether or not it is sufficient.

One thing to think about though, at major rebuild time, it is always a
good practice to replace the oil pump, as this is the lifeblood of the
engine. Although it is not the most inexpensive step, it is relatively
cheap compared the cost of bearings and rocker gear.

The newer pump has a tube extending from the bottom casting, ending in a
"ball" looking screen. To me it looks like a microphone screen. Again,
not a filter per say, but it keeps the larger trash from reaching the
pump.

Both the new and old pumps are interchangeable, but for my money, I would
put on a new, high volume pump, and rest easy.

HTH
