Puff o' smoke and a hi ho silver

Lately, I'm getting quite a lot of dark smoke on startup. After the car's
warm, I don't notice any. It's not running rough, but I am seeing about 500
RPM higher at idle than before. The only thing I changed was last time I
changed the oil, I switched to Redline 10W40, a synthetic. My NAPA guy was
wondering out loud whether my car should even have syntheitc oil, but I know
some of you guys do run it. What would you recommend I do?
