Jay,
Thanks for the suggestion. I disconnected ERG valve and pluged up the holes.
It did not seem to make any difference.  When I tried to set timming to 12
deg, the engined missed badly.  It sounded like an electrical miss in that
it had a regular cadence like a machine gun rather than an irregular miss.
Any ideas?

Does it have an EGR valve.  If so, remove it and plug the hole and see if
any improvement.  It's any easy check before you get more in depth with
your troubleshooting.  Can cause many symptoms.  Won't affect timing but
can affect idle and lower RPM performance.
