Even as a teenager back in 1960, I thought that the "jump seats" in my
Healey were a horrible idea. Putting an adult there always resulted in dents
and scuff marks on the back of the front seats (the least of my worries),
but putting a child in there was just an invitation to disaster - they could
climb out, fall out, or come hurtling into the front seat in the event of an
emergency stop. I don't even want to think about what would happen to back
seat passengers in the event of a serious accident or--God forbid--a
rollover.

I've seen Healeys with very well done seat belts in the back "seats", but I
hope they're for cosmetic purposes only. Even with a properly mounted and
braced full-width roll bar and lap & shoulder belts (and child safety seats
if necessary), back seat passengers would be about as safe as if they were
riding in the bed of a pickup truck.

Besides, the back seats (in my view) made my sports car look like a sedan
for midgets - I never drove it without the tonneau cover in place :-)
