Ben---There are all levels of conversions to the electronic systems. My
personal car has the MSD6-A. It's an older version of this unit, while
the newer one would be even better. (I mistakenly reported that dwell
could be adjusted with a change in point gap. The newer MSD takes over
this function and gives the advantage of more time for the coil to
recharge in high rpm situations.)
MSD still uses the points as the trigger for timing, but the points,
adjustment, and lifespan are a non-issue when connected to the MSD.
Points last "forever".
Another advantage in the MSD is their ability to add on. If you are
building an engine for high performance, you can get a base unit that
will accept REV control, timing retard, and (I think) knock sensor.
Crank firing is also an option.
Instructions for installation are complete, and takes from one to four
hours, depending on how fussy you are about appearance. Return to
"stock" takes but a minute, if one would ever want to (?) It's emissions
legal in all States.
Cons? Price, I guess. Expect to pay about $100 or so for the Control
box. This is all you'll need for a system that will fire spark plugs
"under water", or at least keep them from fouling. Mine are in for
50,000 miles before changing. You can run colder plugs if detonation
from high compression is something you need to forestall.
MSD has a web site.
