Scott,
I don't have a picture, but you should order the excellent TR6 parts
catalogs (volumes 1 and 2) from The Roadster Factory. It has great
illustrations of all systems in the TR6, including the overdrive wiring
details. TRF is a very good supplier for TR6 parts, and their parts
catalog is second to none. They are very well detailed, better than
any other from Moss, Rimmer, Victoria British, etc. They are as close
to a reprint of the original factory parts catalogs that I've seen.
I have an A type o/d on my TR6 (engages on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears).
The switch is located (just as with a J type o/d) on the steering
column behind the turn signal switch. The stock turn signal switch
escutcheon must be removed (very easy) and replaced with a special
escutcheon which houses both the turn signal switch and the new
overdrive switch. The overdrive switch stalk comes out at about a 45
degree angle from the steering column. There is no indicator light for
the o/d, although one can be rigged up pretty easily if desired.
Most of the time, I only engage overdrive in 4th gear. I usually
engage around 3000 rpm unless I'm accelerating hard. I will use the
overdrive in 2nd and 3rd gears if I am really pushing hard and want to
accelerate faster. When overdrive is engaged on any given gear, the
overall ratio changes a bit. In effect, 3rd gear with overdrive is
like "3rd and a half or 3rd and 3/4" gear. I will also use overdrive
instead of upshifting to the next gear if I am in a series of corners
or climbing a hill and know I'll need to downshift soon. Using the
overdrive means I won't need to clutch to downshift later. The clutch
does not need to be used when engaging or disengaging overdrive. This
is nice because it's easier and maybe a bit quicker depending on how
fast you shift. Considering the quality and age of most syncros in a
TR6, you probably can't shift much faster than the o/d engages without
crunching your gears a bit!
