John-According to Moss, the change in spacer types took place at CC61570,
which is early '71,. It is possible that a previous owner had replaced the
diff on your car as it sounds like yours is the earlier type. I don't know if
one type of seal is better than the other. If the seal track isn't too deep
or rough, a little work with emery cloth might be all that is required
instead of the speedi sleeve. While you have the diff out you might consider
drilling&tapping for the drain plug that the factory eliminated. Also, check
the axle seals and the area around the mounting studs for cracks. You are
right about locking wire being used instead of a cotter pin.
