Stuart---It's possible that your oil pump lost its prime. (Sitting
without oil in the sump will eventually drain everything above pump
level) There's two schoold of thought here. The more popular one is to
remove the distributor, complete with pedestal, so you can see the
pump's drive cog. Use a drill motor with a bit of choice so it can spin
the pump.
I've been successful coming up from overhauls (where the pump lost
prime) by just saving the fifth quart of oil and pouring it down into
the oil pump from the top, thru the pedestal. This method has showed oil
pressure within 5 seconds of starting the engine.
Is there an outside chance that the distributor drive cog is not engaged
in the pump? There's a slight offset on the distributor drive dog to
allow line up with the pump slot. You should feel it 'drop in'.
