First of all, many thanks to all who contributed to the
solution of my dilemma.
Did some more digging into the problem last night. Took the
rubber boot of the top of the solenoid and removed the
nylon(?) cap over the contacts. Activated the o.d. switch
and the contact switch vibrated, pushing it down (forced
closure) activated the O.D. While sitting and thinking and
flipping the O.D. switch, I see this itty bitty spark on the
top of the solenoid. There are two coils in the solenoid,
both are activated to engage the O.D.. As the sol. plunger
nears the top of its travel it pushes another plunger upward
and opens the contact, de-energizing the one coil. The spark
was coming from the wire from the other coil, the one that
remains energized as long as the O.D. is engaged. Seems that
some 31 years ago some dedicated worker inadvertently made a
cold solder connection for this wire. It finally came
unglued - was close enough to send electrons across the gap
and spark, but no current in the amount needed to make the
solenoid function as intended. Glued that sucker down w/my
favorite soldering iron and everybody's cool now man.... it
even works.
