John---As you know, if you have air, fuel and spark, the engine should
start. This assumes that there is also compression present. Since the
car has been running up until it would start, we should also assume
nothing's changed here. I'll take a shot at what the problem might be,
long shot that it is, but the best that I can do without laying hands on
it. You say there is fuel to the cylinders based on the wet plugs. You
confirmed spark to the plugs. About the only thing left is that the
spark is firing out of time with the cylinders. Easy enough to check,
and requires no disassembly to speak of. Here's my pitch:
Jog the engine over until the "0" mark on the crank pulley stops under
the pointer on the timing cover. (Within a couple of degrees is close
enough.) Now the rotor inside the distributor should be pointing to
either #1 or #6 spark plug wire terminal on the distributor cap. Before
you take this cap off, note where these two spark plug wires (#1&6) are
on top of the cap. Lift the cap off to see where the distributor rotor
is pointing. It should be directly at either of these two plug wires. If
you know what to do from there, that's good. If not, write back. Either
way, please let us know.
