Why not just get rid of the whole canister contraption and convert to a
spin-on style oil filter?  It'll make you oil changes much easier, and
it helps reduce wear on startup (see the archives for an explanation of
this).  The spin on adapter comes with all the hardware you need, and
there's no spring assembly involved.  Best part is, you can pick up new
oil filters at your local auto store right off the shelf.
