Don---If the fuel pump diaphragm is ruptured, fuel can indeed get into
the crankcase. The pump can easily be taken apart for examination, and
rebuild kits are available if you still have an original AC. Sometimes
just a fuel pressure check will tell if this is the case. Expect between
1 1/2 to 2 lb. of pressure with the engine idling. There are other
signs to look for if you suspect this to be true. Lousy gas mileage, and
oil level rising on the dip stick to mention just a couple. Unless the
gas odor is really overwhelming in the oil you drained, what you smelled
could be the normal combustion by-products found in all used oil.
Running rich from carburetor settings has its own tell-tale signs, and
can show up as a heavy black powder around the sparkplug tips. This too
can be adjusted out, if you want to go there.
