Bob and Chris---While it's possible that both brake light bulbs could
have burned out, one at a time without you knowing it, it's more
probable that the switch itself gave out. These switches aren't exactly
works of art, and can be inconsistant before quitting altogether.
They're also adjustable, so be sure it makes contact during the pedal
depression by checking with a test light, if possible. They're easy
enough to check, and cheap to replace. First, I'd pull each brake light
bulb socket out of its frame and check the integrity of the bulb
filament.
