Dear Ken,

If you are interested in having your transmission rebuilt, call Herman
Vandenakker in Simi Valley, CA. His phone number is (805) 526-9526. Herman
is a retired machinist, a perfectionist, and a master mechanic. You can also
check with Phillip Buck, a 6pack lister, who just used Herman for his
transmission. Phil can be reached at philb@kxr.com.

Subject: Gearbox Woes!

Hi 6'ers -

My 73 TR6 has developed a bad case of Gearbox blues. It has a
J-type OD on it.

It sounds like there are 'things' bouncing around inside the box,
pieces of what i don't know. It shifts into 1-2-3-4 okay, not as
easily as before, but will not go into reverse. It halts at the
first indent you feel when shifting down-and-back. Then it sticks
there. To get it back, just release the clutch and moves quite
freely. Additionally - theres always an additionally - i think
the OD unit is also shot. It feels like it's "on" all the time
thru 3-4, but moving the switch doesn't do anything.

I suspect:

I've blown the reverse selector

The OD unit is blown, stuck on as it seems to be. Will a stuck
OD affect gear shift and selection?

Is there an easy way to verify all the damage -if any before i
pull everything out to remove the hump and tranny?

Are there any places that stock / rebuild tranny's and J type
OD's, preferably in the northern California Area.

All help, suggestions gratefully accepted!
