This topic was beaten to death several months ago on the Triumph list
and I cannot remember any satisfactory answer. In my case, the spline
section faces towards the rear of the car, opposite yours. My car
operates just fine.
Here's something additional which you might want to consider. During
restoration, I took my driveshaft to a local driveshaft specialist and
had it spin balanced. This proceedure will eliminate any vibrations
caused by an unbalanced shaft. It was an inexpensive job, $50 if I
remember correctly, and they claimed that it was slightly bent and
corrected it. Additionally, for that fee, they installed 2 new U-Joints
that I provided them.
So my opinion is if you were happy with the car's operation with the
splines facing forward, then put it back that way. I don't suspect that
it matters, especially since both ends are U-Joints and not CV joints
(another discussion some time ago pertaining to the TR7/8 drive shaft).
