Bill---Your carbs may indeed be causing the symptoms of "lean, beyond
2800 rpm,"
but don't rely on the "piston lifting" test as described in several
publications. The pin, or piston need only be raised about 1/16" to
check the air/fuel mix, not as much as the 1/4" as some write. If the
engine responds to the 1/16" lift-test, the carbs are adjusted properly,
so far as mix is concerned.
Other items that can cause what seems like "fuel starvation" is as
follows:
Partially blocked fuel filter---
carb linkage badly out of sync---
Restricted air flow thru the filters---
not getting full throttle opening---
Mechanical items not related to fuel:
ignition point float---
distributor shaft( bushing) wobble---
flat cam lobes, cam out of time---
Poor compression---
blown head gasket---
Valve spring(s) broken---
Ther are others, but most of the above are not too dificult to check.
Please report back when you determine the cause!
