Check the oil level in the gearbox. I found when the oil gets low, it takes
longer for the OD to engage as it uses the gearbox oil in the hydraulics. A
good test is to see if the OD will engage as you are driving down hill (the
oil runs to the front of the gbox and often the od won't engage. Drive up
the same hill and it should engage immediately.

I had the same problem on my 73 TR6 which also has the J type OD (later
model). The problem turned out to be two things.... one was the contacts on
the switch were dirty, the other was the hinge pin I was worn allowing the
switch lever to move for and aft as well as up and down. This is what was
causing the intermittant disengaging when driving over a bump. The switch
lever should have very minimal fore and aft movement (i.e. 2-3 mm at the
end of the lever) and should have a distinct feel as it turns on and off.
