Mike---This is tough to call, without knowing if you're smelling gas or
oil fumes, or combustion by-products. If the only time you smell fumes
or exhaust, is when the window(s) are down, all I can suggest is for you
to open the hood with the engine running to see if anything's visible,
or smell-able, like a disconnected piece of breather hose, oil, or any
type of liquid dropping onto an exhaust pipe. You didn't mention the
road speed that this smell becomes apparant.
Some types of fumes are more readily seen when exposed to sunlight, as
one possible long-shot detection method.
If your state requires emissions testing, these test stations may have
exhaust gas analyzers. Perhaps if the smell is strong enough, this
sensitive equipment could locate the source. These types of suggestions
are kind of far out, but it's difficult to make a call on this. Any
further info you can provide may narrow it down a bit.
