Don - Don't despair. I, too, found that the manual over-simplifies the
procedure. The arm will not drop enough to allow you to remove the springs
by hand and I can assure you it is unpleasant trying to force it. You need
to disconnect the shafts to allow the trailing arms to fully drop. Lots
and lots of room is then available to do your work. I simply disconnected
the shaft at the diff. (four bolts each side). This was not the procedure
that was recommended to me - that involved disconnecting at the wheel - but
I don't think I did anything wrong (comments from others?). I marked the
shaft and diff sides of the flange so I could put it back the way it came
off. Place the rear of the car on stands, put upward strain on the spring
by jacking up the arm, disconnect your shock, disconnect the shaft and drop
the jack. Presto!
Regarding the shock debate: if originality is not an issue, I strongly
recommend converting to gas shocks. I'm the guy that tried to get all
kinds of advise on redoing the levers last year. I was converted and now
my car is - and I have not regretted the decision. Cook with gas, baby!!
If the cost of Konis makes you ponder the value of your first born, there
are cheaper alternatives, KYB being one.
