Ken - As a general rule, I would not let your buying decision be influenced
by year. At all. There aren't enough differences in the cars from '69 to
'76 to warrant such a consideration. It should be condition and maybe price
that drive the decision process. Having said that and considering your
query, it is ironic that preferences regarding model years quite often
center on the somewhat cosmetic issue of the rubber "bumperettes". I know
a lot of people say they prefer the earlier cars without these items. They
were added part way through the 1974 model year (at the same time as some
other changes forced by government regulations) causing the adoption of the
"1974 1/2" designation.
As an aside and still on the topic of cosmetics, I believe the person who
conceived the British Flag emblem (for export cars to mark the Triumph
anniversary) was brilliant. This may sound ridiculous and is hardly a
factor that should influence your decision, but I have always been partial
to the later cars which sport the emblem. Silly, I know, but there you
have it. But I'm not alone 'cause I've seen earlier cars that have been
resprayed and the owner took the opportunity to add the decal even though
it is not period-correct.
I'll leave any discussion of differences in engine compression, etc. to the
real gurus on this list but, again, there isn't enough difference from year
to year to affect your decision. I believe the Triumph Register web page
has a buyer's guide for the TR6 that you might find helpful.
One thing is certain - any year TR6 is a winner.
